Ruthie's Ramblings: Welcoming a New Friend

Once upon a time, I stood by the front door with my twin sister. I was waiting for the arrival of my long lost best friend Kit Kittredge.

My other sisters were waiting too, but they were not nearly as anxious. They had separated into clumps and were chatting.

Molly and Emily were deep in a discussion about hair ribbons and bobby socks.

Isabelle broke away from Nellie and Aighmi*'s Molly and turned to me.

"Don't worry, Ruthie!" she said, sensing my nervousness. Isabelle is the oldest, and she has a way of always knowing what we younger girls are thinking.

I giggled somewhat shrilly at her, but didn't turn from the door. Wendy put her arm around me.

I turned to Wendy. "Why isn't Kit here? In her letter, she said she would arrive ten minutes ago!"

Wendy smiled at me. "I'm sure she just got a little delayed. She is coming from... where, Georgia?"

"I think so," I said unsmilingly.

"Georgia is more than ten minutes away, you know. I'm sure she'll come any minute now."

I wished I had a magic wand so that- BING!- Kit could suddenly, magically appear.

Just as the thought crossed my mind, the screen door squeaked open and a girl with a bundle opened the door. IT WAS KIT!!!!

"KIT!" I shouted.

"Ruthie," Kit beamed at me.

Before we could say anything else, we started hugging each other.

"I've missed you," Kit said seriously.

"I've missed you too!" I exclaimed.

It was so wonderful to have my friend back! I couldn't wait for her to meet everybody.

Wendy was very excited to see Kit after I'd told her so much about her. After introducing herself, she began taking Kit around so she could meet all of the other girls.

When Kit walked towards the first group, Wendy stepped back. Kit obviously wanted to introduce herself. My friend has never been shy. ;)

Isabelle immediately began oohing and aahing over Kit's skirt and her hair and she and Nellie told her how excited they were to meet her. Molly, a little bit shy, hung back but still greeted Kit warmly.

I watched by the door.

MyLittleMegara's Molly was feeling very huggy that day and hugged both Kit AND Emily to celebrate.

Molly can be very affectionate.

Samantha, Josefina, and Elizabeth were also very excited to see Kit. It was Samantha's idea to get an impromptu family portrait to commemorate the occasion.

It's sort of hard to believe that there are 11 of us here, now! It's like having a big, wonderful sleepover all day every day. It's also hard to believe that my long lost best friend is no longer long lost... and is standing right by me while I type this! I love you, Kit! Welcome home.

Samantha's Scoop: Going to the Museum With Nellie

Hello, everybody! If you read my intro post, you saw that I love Ancient Egypt and going to the museum. When Nellie came, I couldn't wait to take her with me to go see the museum, too!

First stop: an "Egyptian tomb." I love this exhibit, it's so neat!

Nellie and I stopped to sit by this tomb painting and get our photo taken. Nellie had never seen anything like it and was fascinated into silence.

I pointed out some of the details about the painting. I've done some research and was able to share all sorts of facts about the hieroglyphic alphabet and the people in the painting.

"Oh, mercy, Samantha! This is fascinating! I hope you'll share the books you read with me."

"Of course, Nellie!"

"That's a scarab. The ancient Egyptians thought they were very important. Stones carved to look like scarabs were used as amulets and in jewelry and royal seals. A special kind of scarab amulet was used in mummification known as a heart scarab."

"How was a beetle used in mummification?"

"They thought a scarab amulet would protect the body if it was tucked into the linen wrappings around a mummy."

"Oh. Are we going to see a mummy?"

"Not a real one, no."

"Oh. That's too bad."

I was a little surprised. "That wouldn't scare you?"

Nellie laughed. "Why would I be scared of an old dead body?"

Nellie looked at the rows of seated Egyptian gods, confused.

"What is it, Nellie?"

"Samantha, why do those people have animal heads?"

"The Egyptians worshiped them as gods."

"But why do they have animal heads?"

"... ummm... I don't know."

After exploring the tomb for a while and coming up with reasons why the Egyptian gods may have been human/animal hybrids, we left to go visit Kit and Ruthie. Emily told us about them after she went to the museum and we couldn't wait to meet them.

Sure enough, they were right where we expected them to be, hanging out in their tree house.

Nellie and I waved, catching Ruthie's attention first.

"Hello," Ruthie said, "I'm Ruthie!"

"I'm Samantha!" I called.

"I'm Nellie," Nellie replied.

"We're so excited to see you! Emily told us all about you!" I burst out.

"Oh, you know Emily! She was very nice. I'm so happy we're getting more doll visitors!"

Kit was also excited to see us.

"It's so nice to get all these visitors," she said while beaming.

I enjoyed getting to meet Kit and Ruthie and I enjoyed spending the day with my best friend and I enjoyed going to an old tomb and I enjoyed exploring the museum and... I think you get the idea.

Hello From Us: Samantha

After Isabelle, apparently, MyLittleMegara was perfectly set. No more AG dolls needed... or so she thought. My old human had decided she didn't want me any more and she took me to a thrift store. I was so sad, sitting on that shelf with a Josefina doll who snubbed me... until MyLittleMegara saw me. Now I have a new home with new sisters (including a Josefina who does not snub me!) and I couldn't be happier.

Full Name: Samantha Mary Parkington

Age: 9

I Like This Time Period: Victorian! I love the frilly fashions and furniture.

Hobbies: Playing the violin, climbing trees, playing with my sisters and my dog

Three Words to Describe Me: Nice, loyal, spontaneous

My Closest Friends: MyLittleMegara, Nellie, Aighmi*, Jip

"[Samantha] was angry now. She was very angry. And when Samantha was angry she was not likely to sit still." - Samantha Learns a Lesson, Susan S Adler

I like bright colors like purple and pink and I like to make music. I'm not very good at playing the violin yet, but Isabelle told me that when I get better she'd love to dance while I play it. I also like learning about Ancient Egypt and have ever since the first time I went to the museum.

I'm going to end my posts with

Hello From Us: Isabelle

It was a long time before MyLittleMegara got another AG doll... almost three years, actually! She was happy with her six dolls and didn't even really have a want list. Then the GOTY 2014 was launched and she fell head over heels in love. Luckily, her grandparents came through once again and I was a very exciting birthday present.

Full Name: Isabelle Anne Palmer-Bjorgman

Age: 13

I Like This Time Period: Modern! I do like vintage inspired modern outfits... peter pan collars, stuff like that, but I'm happiest here, in the 2010's. I have been known to borrow a dress from Molly or Ruthie and pair it with sneakers and a jacket...

Hobbies: Sewing/ fashion design, dance, collecting Tangled memorabilia

Three Words to Describe Me: Passionate, creative, intelligent

My Closest Friends: MyLittleMegara, Wendy, Aighmi*

"When I opened the door, I felt as if I were stepping into a cave filled with treasure, like the one in the story 'Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves.' Only instead of chests of gold coins and jewels, there was a whole wall filled with bolts of fabric in all sorts of colors and patterns." - Designs by Isabelle, Laurence Yep

As you've seen, I really, really like to sew. I actually made the overalls I'm wearing! They were really easy to make... I drafted the top, pocket, and straps and modified a pattern I got here for the shorts.

I probably will post style guides and things like that, which I will end with
To the stars,

Hello From Us: Elizabeth

When MyLittleMegara got Wendy, she very nearly chose to ask for Elizabeth instead. Wendy came home instead of me and that ended up being wonderful because both of us are family members now.

Full Name: Elizabeth Constance Cole

Age: 12

I Like this Time Period: I love colonial dresses, but I also love Alice in Wonderland so the 1800's, I guess? But then I also love modern clothes... please, don't make me pick!

Hobbies: Figure skating, caring for my many cats, reading

Three Words to Describe Me: I can't possibly do this quickly... I'm an INFJ, and as such I am a walking contradiction and complication!

My Closest Friends: Josefina, my cats, and MyLittleMegara

"'Perhaps,' said Elizabeth, "But I like the way it is here, where people are independent and can work hard and make their lives better.'" - Very Funny, Elizabeth!, Valerie Tripp

I don't know if anybody reading this knows anything about the MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) test, but I'm an INFJ. We are the most rare type, making less than 2% of the population and are somewhat complicated. Most people have a hard time understanding how our minds and hearts work, which is part of why it is so cheering to me to have a friend like Josefina. She does everything she can to make sure she understands how I'm feeling.

I probably won't post very often, but if I do I shall end with
Elizabeth

Hello From Us: Ruthie

MyLittleMegara hadn't been planning on getting any more AG dolls after Wendy. She had four and she liked them all very much. Then Kit's collection was expanded to include her best friend, and she couldn't resist the curly haired charms of the new doll. That was me... Ruthie!

Full Name: Ruth Ann Smithens

Age: 11

I Like This Time Period: Modern and the 1930's. Modern because of all of the fairy tale retellings we have now and the 1930's because of my stories and the fashions.

Hobbies: Watching movies, writing, dressing up, daydreaming, telling stories

Three Words to Describe Me: Generous, ladylike, romantic

My Closest Friends: Wendy, my twin; MyLittleMegara; and Coconut (the sweetest puppy ever!)

"Ruthie struggled to say what she had in her head. 'I don't really believe  that life always works out like fairy tales do,' she said slowly, 'and the wishes-come-true and the happy endings aren't the only reasons I like fairy tales. I like them because they show that no matter what happens to us, it's how we act along the way that matters. We still get to choose what kind of people we want to be.'" - Really Truly Ruthie, Valerie Tripp

My favorite color is purple. I like it for a lot of reasons, but one of the reasons is that traditionally, purple is the color of royalty. As you've seen, I like to pretend that I am a princess. My favorite princess is Snow White because we look similar and I admire her kindness.

Hello From Us: Nellie

Hello, my name is Nellie.  I only recently moved here to live with Aighmi* & MyLittleMegara & their dolls.  This is a wonderful place to live!

Full Name: Nellie O'Malley

Age: 8

I Like This Time Period:  I am not sure.  I am most familiar with the early 1900s, but would be happy to learn more about this modern time, too.

Hobbies: Climbing trees, doing useful things and making crafts, and spending time with my new family.

Three Words to Describe Me: Curious, helpful, cheerful.

My Closest Friends: My heart sister Samantha, Aighmi*, and Aighmi*s Molly.

"I wish you could see me now, Mam, thought Nellie. You'd say I am the luckiest girl in the world." - Nellie's Promise, Valerie Tripp

I love to be outside!   You can see that from these pictures, of course.  If I can't be making something or helping someone, then I want to be up in a tree and enjoying fresh air.  I only just arrived here a few weeks ago, so I am still figuring everything out about this new world of mine.  It is such an exciting place, and I have already been on several adventures...and I can't wait to tell everyone all about them!

When I write, you will know, because I will proudly sign my name,

Nellie O'Malley
